UBC Hospital

The UBC Hospital opened in 1968 and is located on the UBC Campus. Specialty areas acute medicine, general surgery, reconstructive orthopedic surgery, psychiatry and gerontology. UBC Hospital has eight operating rooms, 58 inpatient (overnight) beds and 800 physicians and staff. Patients make approximately 28,000 clinic visits to the hospital, to clinics such as the Bladder Care Centre, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Breast Reconstruction Program and the Operational Stress Injury (OSI) clinic. UBC Hospital features an Urgent Care Centre which offers specialized treatment for non-life threatening emergencies by emergency trained physicians and nurses.
UBC Hospital offers a wide-range of neurological care and services:

The Acute Neurology Clinic provides rapid assessment of patients with neurological complaints such as seizures, vestibular disorders, or other unexplained neurological symptoms that require rapid evaluation within two weeks.

The Neuropsychiatry Inpatient (overnight) Unit accepts patients from across BC. The inpatient program provides intensive assessments, treatment and stabilisation of complex neuropsychiatry patients. The Neuropsychiatry Outpatient Clinic provides assessment and treatment to neuropsychiatric patients who are experiencing mild to moderate distress or dysfunction.

The Multiple Sclerosis Clinic has a multidisciplinary team approach with staff such as neurologists, occupational therapists and speech therapists treating patients. Each patient has the opportunity to participate in groundbreaking research with the ultimate mandate to find the cause of cure of this disease.

The Clinic for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders is a world renowned centre for diagnosis and treatment for Alzheimer disease and dementia patients. The clinic offers the latest techniques as well as support from a wide range of health care professionals such as neuropsychologists and geriatric psychiatrists.

The Pacific Parkinson’s Research Centre is a Centre of Excellence for diagnosis and management of Parkinson’s and other related disorders. The centre is one of only two facilities of its kind across Canada . The centre has the largest peer-reviewed research program on Parkinson’s disease in Canada .

The Brain Research Centre, a partnership of the UBC Faculty of Medicine and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute is also located at UBC Hospital. The Brain Research Centre comprises more than 200 investigators with multidisciplinary expertise in neuroscience research ranging from the test tube, to the bedside, to industrial spin-offs.
